The UN proves

Assalamualaikum wbt…

How are you Miss Syida? May Allah bless you and hopefully you are in a good health condition. In this entry, I will summarize the topic on what I have learned. I’m here to summarize about The Un proves that once again become a toothless nature. The United Nations represents or is supposed to represents fairness and justice in handling global issues and challenges. It is supposed to act based on thorough investigations. But in this case, the head of the UN goes to the nation which attacked an adjacent territory but did not have the guts to visit the territory that was under immense bombardment and attack from all sides.

The Moment

Assalamualaikum…

How are you Miss Syida? May Allah bless you and hopefully you are in a good health condition. In this entry, I will summarize the topic on what I have learned. I’m here to summarize about the article of The Moment. In the article, it stated that there comes a point at which guilty party confesses in open courting certain kind of courtroom drama. Few people would have expected a moment like that to emerge from any trial of the suspects at Guantanamo. The terrorist aren’t prone to making their captors tasks easier. Other than that, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed wants to reach martyrdom through execution.

Reading 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5

Assalamualaikum wbt…
Dear Miss Syida, how are you? Hope you are fine and have a blissful life with family and friends. In this seventh entry on this blog, I would like to give a brief summary on the ‘What is the evidence?’ chapter.

Reading 4.3 What is the evidence?

This chapter is concerned with the issue of evidence. It begins with the famous case of the kidnapping of the infant son of Charles Lindbergh and examines the evidence, the wholly circumstantial, that led to the conviction and execution of Bruno Hauptmann. The evidence presented to the jury by the prosecution when the case came to trial. The police found the $14,600 of the ransom money in his garage. And his total asset when he was arrested were about $40,000 that he cannot earn that much in the stock market.

The other evidence was the kidnapper note that written in the German origin and Bruno Hauptmann was a German immigrant in illegal way, where the Hauptmann smuggled himself into the US after breaking from the jail at the German. The writer talks about the quality of evidence in other famous cases, including historical treatment of past events. In all cases, the writer urges that a reader should continue a critical stance towards everything that is read, always asking the question ‘what is the evidence?’ before making the conclusion.

Reading 4.4 Statistic

In this chapter is concerned with the use and misuse of statistic and is intended to caution readers into a more informed response to text that link facts and figures. It begins by defining terms, mentioning a number of domains where the statistic is widely used. It goes on then to name and describe four common statistical slips that can be made. A text is then offered for reading and analysis, with the reader being asked to evaluate the deductions made within the text from the statistic used.A further exercise is offered including three tables, requiring the reader to draw well-grounded inferences from the data contained in the tables. The importance of statistic in human affair is obvious from our tendency to associate facts closely with figures.

Unqualified averages, fallacious sampling, percentages unaccompanied by actual numbers and misleading presentation is the way to guard oneself against being misled by misused statistic is not to shun or mistrust all figures but to become consciously or unconsciously.

Reading 4.5 Crooked and fallacious thinking

The two chapters argue that crooked and fallacious thinking is not only evidence of illogical mental processes and poor communication skill but is also a manipulative tool in the hands of speakers or writers wishing to influence and affect the judgments of their listeners and readers. Especially in contexts where there is an intent to persuade someone towards a particular belief or course of action, we are likely to encounter instances of crooked and fallacious thinking.

Much human misunderstanding and blunder arises because many people are not aware of the fact that their trends of thought, and thus their communication processes, are frequently muddled, illogical and fallacious. Transfer device, the common forms of fallacious and crooked thinking is the use of the transfer device. By this device, a crooked thinker transfer the prestige of something of which we approve or even respect to something which he wants us to accept. Circular argument may give the impression that he is in fact not proving anything. False analogy is used to support an argument in fact proves nothing; there is only a superficial or chance similarity.

Reading 3.3 Critical literacy: a linguistic perspective.

Assalamualaikum wbt…
How are you Miss Syida? May Allah bless you and hopefully you are in a good health condition. In this entry, I will summarize the topic on what I have learned.

In this topic, the writer approach is to develop the linguistic tools readers need to enable them to recognize certain global or key elements of a text. These elements have technical names such as genre, field, tenor, mode, and ideology. The writer aims is to discover elements of the language so as to dig out the ideology that exist, as it were behind the text. He argues that even a text that seems innocently devoid of ideology may in fact be shown to be highly ideological. His sample texts are passages from school textbooks used by students doing junior secondary commerce course.
Reading 3.4 Speech and Speakers: the formation of individuals in discourse and genre.

What I have understood in this particular topic is about giving a positioning in individuals, group and so on. This way in illustrate the reader into particular position through text and it is the value systems in certain norms and modes of behaviors.

The writer of this text illustrate the language use and its ability to reflects and how it have shaped us as people, including our understanding of who we are, and our attitudes to other people and the world in generally. The writer use the article from the Cleo magazine to illustrated the idea of the formation that how the language described people like example Miss Seductress that described as the insecurity women while in contrast the Miss Winner as independent women. One function of text of this kind of recruit’s new readers to a reading position. Give description of who we are and people around us from the language of the text and. The article also can be feminist discourse so that women know where there are at and this text are promote that women can be used as the object by men.

This kind of writing is related to critical literacy on the positioning area. Where the language is giving role to the people, it constructs the participants in the text. The perspective toward the type of people portraits through the writing and language use.

Reading 1.2, 2.2 and 2.3

Assalamuaikum w.b.t…Hi Miss Syida, how are you? Hope you bless before reading my first entry. I was working hard to understand this entire chapter and now I would like to share with you my understanding about Reading 1.2, 2.2 and 2.3.

Reading 1.2 Stories and Facts

Stories and facts is a two kind of form that different from each other in term of its function and the different or the type of writing. This two kind writing is build with its purpose in bringing and deliberating the meaning in the text. In this reading is focuses on form of the actual writing in recount, procedure writing, report writing, creativity and imagination in factual writing, developing report writing, explanation, sexism and factual writing, exposition and the summary of all content.

Stories are about what has happen that are usually the story teller. It was told in casually conversation. Spoken recount tend to be personal that it is mostly talk about ourselves, about what we feel, what we did and the way we think towards what had happen in the event that we’re experienced in it. In writing system where the procedure may draw a general conclusion from specific events and described how thing are happen in instruction order writing procedure the text tells that the young child should be learn the recognition in writing impersonal and personal text and know the differences between two type of writing. Which can use be to describe and express the feeling in the story better through writing?

Reading 2.2 Language, Perspective, Ideology

Language and perspective the linguistic reflexes of differences of perspective across speakers of the same language. The text that the writer chooses is has something to do with the fact that it is the kind of report that one reads every day in the news paper. The writer brought the white perspective that occurs at the second word of the text. Assign the modifier black here to the noun township is the relevance of ethnicity to the general situation that is the subject of this report. Perspective and ideology seem to have a connection but they have their own meaning. Perspective can be changed based on the situation. Rules cannot be changed and also can’t be wrong. It depends on the individual’s perspective towards the ideology.

The writer clarifies how the notions are connected to the choices made by it in the construction of texts. By clarifying these connections, the writer aims to show how the careful reading of texts can reveal the ideological assumptions which inform their production. The first marker in the text is white perspective occur at the second word of the text. This is expected that the township of Soweto direct to the expectation on the part of the reader that people are white.

Reading 2.3 Texts and textualities

In this reading text is a considered the different sorts of meanings that signs generate we emphasized the paradigmatic axis of meaning. There are many possible on signifier and signified; a sign’s meaning results from its sign can be combined. Sign has meanings for various groups of people in various social contexts use the sign in different ways depending on the situation.

Myths are naturalized coding of social meanings and values. The extreme effect of myth is to hide the semiotic workings of a texts signs and codes. Myth guarantees that Dunhill cigarettes do not merely signify status and taste; they are turns social signs into facts. The key signifiers in this advertisement include the colors. The dominant signified seems to be nature. The text sets up a contrast between the natural and the cultural. The myths that influence texts are not simply true or false. They rather process of thought that both structure and get represented in texts, and thereby often reproduce and reinforce certain values and beliefs for readers. I this way reading texts become a social practice.

The verbal and visual signs come from codes that represent the orient culture difference from the western world. The mythic effect of this fused, double sign of Bill Taylor is naturalize patriarchal politics through linking it to a seemingly natural, truthful image of the family.

Reading 1.2 Battling the Bullies

The article is telling us the story about handling schoolyard bullying by illustrating Mary Watson’s experience in conducting her six year old son whom had been victimized by bullies at his school. At first, she did not notice that her child has been bullied at school. After looking at her son’s condition, she feels something is wrong with her child. Finally, she knew that her son was bullied by his schoolmate. Eventually, Ms. Watson changed the schools. The next year, her son looks forward to school everyday. The case shows just how much effect a bully can have on a student. Usually, the victim will traumatized when they feel so terrified about it. The participants in the article are students, parents, teachers, and psychologist.

The article describes bullies that they deviant whom physically and mentally abuse their victims. The writer then enlightens her claims by proving that bullies are no longer acceptable in schools. Furthermore, he stand for all the victims of bullying who suffered “panic, headaches, insomnia and else”. The writer also concern about the victim’s right to fight against the bullying case. In contrast, the writer also admits that bullies happen because of the victim’s bad behaviors and require a counseling session to free from their hidden self. The other thing is the bullying victims which is Mary Watson’s son represents as six-year-old boy which being traumatic and escaping the school after being bullied by his friend. Mary Watson positioned as concerned and responsible mother, as she is so concern about her son’s situation who has been bullied by his schoolmate. In addition, school also positioned as worthless as they managed to remain the anti-bullying policy and not try to stop or prevent bullying in the school. The writer construct the readers by including advises from expert especially psychologist named Dr Cross. Last but not least, the examples from Mary Watson case will give guidelines to parents on how to make a survey on their children as to avoid bullying.

Assalamuaikum w.b.t…
Hi Miss Syida, how are you? Hope you bless before reading my first entry. I was working hard to understand this entire chapter and now I would like to share with you my understanding about Reading 1.3.

Reading 1.1: Convicted Killer

The article convicted killer who is back at work is about a nurse named Deborah Parry who was suspected on murdering her colleague Australian named Yvonne Giltord in a hospital at Saudi Arabia has been given the all-clear to carry on her full time job in an English hospital. She seems like an innocent, helpful, kind hearted, and patient person. The article is deliberate for non-specialist audience who is not in medical or legal professions. This is because the use of language in this article is a simple language and suitable for all people to read. If it is for specialist audience, there will be a different emphasis.
The article is designed to give information to the readers, to let them know what is happen to a convicted killer who is back to work again. The article also wants to warn people that a nurse who is convicted of an awful murder of her own colleague in a hospital was let to work again in hospital. The article aims to warn people that a convicted killer who is work as a nurse back to work again in a hospital. The writer focuses to blame the person who allowed the nurse to work again in hospital. So, the writer is actually wants to let people know he feels that the nurse is guilty. The effect on readers is likely to be very strong to influence them that Deborah Parry is actually guilty if they do not really go through the case. They will easily influenced by the way of the writer tells them.

Reading 1.3 Rules and Regulations

The social structure and language structure relate to one another that are it is a product of social circumstances, example the nature of groups and the structure of personal interactions. It is occur to express social circumstances through speech and writing. Language use is an instrument by means of which people manage their own behavior, and influence that of others that are social grouping are organized and the meanings available to those groups are determined. The languages also use to influence, control and manipulate the readers.
Rules are sets of instructions by the powerful people to those below them to follow the particular order. There are many deviance are discovered and lead to the destruction this are why people made rules to avoid the chaos it also use maintain peace between members and authority without lessening the power of authority. In written rules, use of various grammars and the way words are structured or syntax. It is something uses to state firmly and cleanly or declare. In imperative, it is use to formally state important thing that need immediate attention and action.

Regulation is more specific, more on bureaucratic and impersonal; it is a written document so that a body can function effectively when all members are in peaceful conditions which allow freedom. It is more direct and constitutive and also remote that is no connection between the body and those below.
